Hard Mix Noise

You have several ways to customize a pseudo-halftone effect in Photoshop. Although you can apply the Color Halftone filter directly, I prefer having more control when executing the effect. The following technique uses random noise and allows for easy variations. It doesn’t produce a true halftone simulation, but it’s still a great look for portraits with large dynamic range, and is also useful for creating minimalist looks in high-key images.

1 Create a blank layer above your image, and fill with 50% gray.

2 Change the gray layer’s blend mode to Hard Mix.

3 Add noise to the gray layer (50% to 100%).

4 Apply Gaussian blur to the noise layer (2 px to 10 px).

5 Reduce Fill Opacity to about 70% or less.

This effect looks best on high-resolution images, typically print sizes of at least four or five inches on a side at 300 dpi. Smaller images, or those intended for screen output, should be scaled up or use much smaller values for noise and opacity settings. Scale your image with caution because doing so introduces artifacts; but the effect here should give you a lot of latitude to hide any imperfections caused by making the image larger.

Create a new layer above your background image and fill it with 50% gray. Name this layer Noise.

Change Noise’s blend mode to Hard Mix to reduce your image to six colors plus black and white.

Choose Filter > Noise > Add Noise to apply some noise to the Noise layer. In the dialog box, choose between 50% and 100% values, with Gaussian and Monochromatic selected.

Finally, apply a small blur to Halftone using Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
